I traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico and took these photos of the area of shatter cones by the side of a highway. These were discovered by a geologist in 2005 at the side of State Route 475 east of Santa Fe. He published a paper in 2007 about it. Hundreds of thousands of people have passed by this area for decades and no one noticed until 2005. These photos show how much shatter cones can vary across different kinds of rocks even within the same area. Shatter cones are a reliable indicator of a meteor impact site. The side of SR475 is nothing but shatter cones for a half mile stretch, and fractued rocks in patterns resembling shatter cones for another mile either side. I visited to help with the comparison for the research into a suspected impact site in Nevada.
