Why did I get a Geiger counter?

No, the page about "Background Radiation Measurements near Port Chicago" was not the reason I got my RM-80 electronic radiation monitor (Geiger counter) from Aware Electronics.

I bought it for a completely different reason. Some friends and I are making some trips to the area around southeastern Nevada and southwestern Utah. Since that area is ENE from the Nevada Test Site, I wanted to be able to monitor the areas we go, just to be sure my friends and I are safe there.

I brought along the RM-80 on a trip there in April. It became clear that I didn't have enough experience using it, and also needed to write some software for logging it. So this exercise of taking background readings around Port Chicago was supposed to be just to get practice using the instrument and to test my logging software.
