Pictures from "StratoFox 2" trip to Black Rock

Saturday, August 23 - Exploring the Black Rock Range

One of the points of this trip was to get some familiarity with the interior of the Black Rock Range mountains prior since this is within the downrange area for some future rocket launches.

This is the only trail that's shown on the USGS topographic maps, thought we could see others in the area. That may mean this is the best trail in the area, and even it used a creekbed for part of the way. It's a very rough trail that eventually turned us around. Even if you figure out where this is from the photos, we advise not trying this trail if you're traveling in just one vehicle.

We're now enroute on the 4x4 trail to check out the interior of the Lower Black Rock Range. The second lakebed where our camp is located is visible in the background.

Looking south from the 4x4 trail through the lower Black Rock Range. A sliver of the second lakebed where our camp is located is visible within the mountain range ahead. The east arm of the Black Rock Desert playa is visible to the left and straight ahead in the distance.

Saturday morning we explored this 4x4 trail in the Black Rock Range.

From the 4x4 trail looking east, we're looking over the lower Black Rock Range and onto the east arm of the Black Rock Desert playa. The east arm is the more remote and inaccessible of the two, where it isn't flat or drivable because the Quinn River winds through it.

Dave and Sean are shown in this picture where the group stopped during the exploration of the Black Rock Range.
