After lunch on Saturday, our groups split up to various other exploration we wanted to do. My group (Gary, Bryan and I) went to the Smoke Creek Desert to scout out a possible alternate route to California for the next day, and just look around the area. We ended up assisting a gentleman who had gotten his RV stuck. There always seems to be some form of rescue to do for someone on every trip to Black Rock.
And we looked around at the Smoke Creek Desert playa, where we found the remains of a high-power rocket. At first we couldn't rule out that it could be JP Aerospace's Space Flight '99 rocket, some parts of which were not recovered from the Smoke Creek Desert. But upon closer inspection after taking it home to San Jose and comparing with photos of the SF99 rocket, it was determined not to be one of ours.
The three groups that we had split up into were all aware of where the others were going. The plan was that if anyone didn't check in on the Ham Radio by 6PM, then we'd initiate a search for them. We were surprised that we were able to contact the others (who were near Trego at Black Rock) with only a handheld Ham Radio while we were standing on a sand dune in the Smoke Creek Desert. One of us would have had to run back to the truck to do the checkin if that hadn't worked.

From Hwy 34, we snapped a picture of the site where clean-up was still in progress a week after the Burning Man event had ended. I've now started calling it "Burning Pig" because of the giant stuffed animal that a co-worker took there with intent to burn. |

More of the Burning Man clean-up, with some speed-smeared terrain closer to the camera. |

Bryan KF6ZEO gives me directions (in the truck) and Gary KG6CGA takes pictures while we try to help a gentleman whom we've discovered stranded in the Smoke Creek Desert, having high-centered his RV and trailer taking a turn to a side road too wide. His cable looks flimsy. But I realized I had left my tow strap at home. Oops! |

Bryan KF6ZEO surveys the aftermath when the flimsy cable provided by the gentleman busted on the first attempt. We were able to pull him out a moment later using a bicycle lock cable. |
